Chapter 17

I let Valen guide me to the dance floor, his hand warm and rough, and I hated that it sent delicious little thrills through me.

When he found his spot, he turned, holding on to my hand, and put his other hand on my waist, nudging me closer. The heat from his touch soaked through my dress’s fabric as I draped my left hand on his shoulder.

If you’d ask me, I couldn’t have even told you what music was playing right now.

Valen led with confidence on the dance floor, and I found myself falling in rhythm with him. Obviously, this wasn’t the first time he’d danced or even attended this type of ball.

Women stared shamelessly at him, and I even spotted a female licking her lips sensuously at him as we twirled past. Even some of the men stared, but Valen never took notice.

I had two left feet, but Valen didn’t seem to notice that either. In fact, all he did was stare at me. The heat of his gaze was intense.

My face flushed, and I ignored the silly butterflies assaulting my stomach.

“So, where have you been?” I thought having a conversation now was better than the uncomfortable silence between us. Might as well get it over with and pull the Band-Aid off.

A smile tugged on those damn pretty lips, and the hand at my waist curled around the small of my back. “You’ve been looking for me?” His warm breath caressed my face, smelling of mints and something spicy I couldn’t place.

I swallowed. “Yes, as a matter of fact, I was. I am. I was looking for you.” Damn, I sounded like a blathering idiot. “I wanted to ask you something.”

Valen was still smiling at me. “What did you want to ask me?”

I couldn’t outright tell him that he was my number one suspect. It was over if I told him I saw him leave room 915. I needed more proof—a real motive as to why he was doing this. Was he working for someone else? Was he doing this alone? I had my suspicions, but I needed to make sure.

“How’s the restaurant business going?” I asked instead, aware that I wasn’t getting any of the witch vibes from him being so close. I could sense prickles of energy rolling off him, like most paranormals, but the specific type impossible to pinpoint. He could pass for a werewolf or any kind of shifter. But I didn’t know any shifters or weres who were capable of that level of magic. And he could be a powerful witch or wizard with a glamour.

“It’s going,” he answered, clearly not wanting to discuss it. “You look beautiful tonight.”

Ah, hell, the way he said it had my traitorous heart flapping like it had sprouted wings.

“Uh… that suit suits you well,” I said, totally missing the mark. My tongue seemed glued to the floor of my mouth. It sometimes happened when I got nervous.

Valen’s luscious lips spread into a smile. “Thank you.”

Stupid tingles erupted over my skin, and I cleared my throat.
